A new kind of bus service is starting up in Rock Island.

On Sunday, February 16th, 2014, the Supermarket Shuttle make its first rounds. The free monthly bus service is organized by the University of Illinois Extension and takes people to Aldi and HyVee in Rock Island.

According to a press release, "the Supermarket Shuttle will create a direct free transportation option to grocery stores, saving riders both time and money. University of Illinois Extension's Nutrition and Wellness staff will also offer helpful shopping tips as well as some easy, healthy and tasty recipes for riders to try."

"Shopping at major grocery stores will help to stretch families' SNAP benefits and will provide a larger variety of fresh, frozen and canned fruits and vegetables. The Supermarket Shuttle will empower participants to make healthier food choices for themselves and their families."

The Supermarket Shuttle runs once a month. Its upcoming dates are March 16th, April 20th, and May 18th.

The bus picks up at eight locations including:

- Sunset Heights 8th Street

- Francis Willard/Manor Homes

- Westside Church of Christ

- Douglas Park

- Century Woods

- MLK Center

- Spencer Towers

- Word of Life Christian Center
