Organizers of a program that inspires children to read is seeking volunteers.

Through the United Way’s program, Operation READ, volunteers visit more than a dozen locations around the Quad Cities to read to children and engage them in creative activities.

According to a spokesperson from the program, more than 100 volunteers are needed to fill all the sites for 2014. People who want to help sign-up for one month at a time and commit roughly four hours per month.

“So when you start out early and you read to children, and they love reading, well then they’re more likely to be reading on grade level, graduating from high school, and building a successful life for themselves,” said United Way’s Vice President of Marketing, Jenny Parvin.

Operation READ has reached more than 10,000 children and distributed more than 16,000 books since it began in 2007.
