Counties, residents battle through winter conditions

County highway departments are pulling the plows and schools are being closed in the anticipation of dangerously cold temperatures in the Quad Cities.

A winter storm warning in the Quad Cities caused cancellations, closings, and arrangements to be made to avoid the frigid temperatures.

According to the Rock Island County Highway Department, snow plows were scheduled to be pulled from county highways at 7 p.m. Sunday, January 5, 2014. Plowing was set to resume at 6 a.m. Monday. Drivers were advised to avoid Rock Island County Highways during this set time.

The Henry County Highway Department also pulled trucks at 7 p.m. with plans to return to the roads at 6 a.m. Monday.

Officials confirmed that Mercer County has pulled plows overnight as well.

According to their Facebook page, Ski Snowstar in Andalusia will be closed until Wednesday, January 8 due to extreme cold temperatures and wind. The winter sports park closed Sunday at 5 p.m.
