More than two-dozen firefighters battled a Burlington, Iowa apartment fire that sent several people to the hospital early New Year’s Day.

The fire was reported in a six-unit apartment building at 1115 Vine Street just after 3 a.m. Wednesday, January 1, 2014.  Firefighters said heavy smoke was visible from all openings in the building when they arrived.

Fire Marshal Mark Crooks said two Burlington firefighters and four people who live in the building were treated at the scene and then taken to an area hospital.  One of those firefighters was already released from the hospital.

Eighteen Burlington firefighters, including ten who were off-duty, plus nine firefighters from West Burlington joined forces to fight the fire.
