UPDATE as of Saturday, December 28th, 2013 -- Fire crews were on watch all night after Friday's fire at a Davenport apartment building sent one person to the hospital and left more than a dozen others homeless.
On Saturday, December 28th, officials with the Davenport Fire Department told News 8 that investigators were on the scene all day going through debris to figure out what happened.
They say they don't know yet what started the fire, but say they believe it started in the southwest corner apartment on the first floor.
Fire officials say the building suffered severe damage and the investigation is ongoing.
The Red Cross is helping 12 adults and 2 children at this time.
EARLIER STORY: One person was hospitalized Friday night with symptoms of smoke inhalation following a massive fire at an apartment building on the corner of Brady and 7th Streets.
The fire broke out at 138 E. 7th Street just after 6:00 p.m. It took firefighters roughly three hours to extinguish it.
Davenport Communications Director Jennifer Nahra told News 8 that the building, which was completely occupied, had 14 people inside when the fire spread. Everyone was able to get out with the help of first responders.
Davenport Fire Chief Lynn Washburn said her crews encountered "heavy fire conditions" on the first floor when they got into the building.
Firefighters will remain at the building overnight to put out any hotspots.
The Red Cross is assisting any tenants who need help finding a place to stay Friday.
First responders didn't have an update on the hospitalized tenant's condition or the extent of the damage.
The investigation into a cause continues.
