Chicken discovery on highway becomes Christmas miracle

It was believed to be a Christmas miracle when an Iowa City man discovered a load of chickens on the highway.

According to KCRG, Blaine Thomas discovered a pile of freshly butchered chickens when he was traveling on Highway 1 on Wednesday, December 18, 2013.

The chickens had originally been on a truck heading toward a food bank in Solon, set to be Christmas dinners for those in need.

“We just wanted to make sure people had something other than potato chips and a loaf of bread,” said Jay Proffitt who helped raise the chickens for the charity project.

He said while they were in route to the food bank “one of the coolers fell out and dumped the chickens on the road.”

After finding the abandoned chickens, Thomas posted his unusual highway discovery on Facebook and a tip he received led him to Proffitt.

“I could hear the sense of relief in his voice, he said those were destined for the food pantry,” Thomas said. “How heart-warming is that?”

“I called our pastor and I told him, you’re not going to believe the miracle that just happened,” Proffitt said. “I said we found our chickens.”
