Families registered for Toys for Tots started picking up gifts for their children the weekend before Christmas.

Toys for Tots distribution began on Saturday, December 21, 2013. Staff Sergeant Matthew Starratt said 2,500 recipients were expected on the first day of pickup.

“Any family that is struggling around the holidays, we’re here to help them out and make sure that their kids have a good Christmas this year,” Starratt said.

Distribution was scheduled to continue on Sunday.

“It’s about the kids,” he said. “Making sure that they have a good holiday and that’s really the only reason.”

Starratt said nearly 45,000 toys were donated during the 2013 season.
