The recovery is well underway, but victims of the November 2013 tornado that ripped through Central Illinois have not been forgotten.
On Saturday, December 7, 2013 students at Carl Sandburg College in the cosmetology program held a cut-a-thon in Galesburg to raise money for the tornado victims.
Customers received a haircut for a $5 minimum donation. All proceeds were given to the American Red Cross to help with their relief efforts.
“When we heard about what happened in Washington, our class just came together and talked about how we wanted to do something,” said student Shannon Avalos. “Since we don’t have the opportunity to go to Washington and physically help there, I think it’s awesome that we all can come together as a class here and kind of use our creative talents and skills and send money there and help out in any way we can.”
The college was able to collect items for tornado victims in Washington and Pekin by holding a supply drive. They also raised $2,000 from home basketball game ticket sales and the opening night of their musical production “Urinetown.” Money from the events was given to the American Red Cross.
