A home over 100 years old was transformed into a Christmas wonderland for people to come and tour.
Sunday, December 1, 2013 was the Rock Island Parks & Recreation’s Winter in Bloom open house. The 102-year-old Hauberg Civic Center, former home of Susanne (Denkmann) and John Hauberg, in Rock Island was decorated with holiday themes and poinsettias throughout.
Director of the Hauberg Civic Center Jennifer Klinefelter said the house is the main attraction. Many of the original artifacts remain in the home.
“Here at the house since we have so many rooms we have a lot of different groups that come and they all have their own different idea of how to decorate their space,” Klinefelter said. “There’re a lot of unique ideas that I’ve seen and I’m sure people come here as well and pick up some ideas.”
Members of the Rock Island Preservation Society, Valley Weavers and Spinners, Rock Island Horticulture Club, Rock Island Jr. Women’s Club, and Rock Island Parks and Recreation Department decorated the center.
Klinfelter said the event is a kick-off to Christmas.
They had parks and recreation programs throughout the house, including a Christmas tree craft made from ice cream cones, frosting, and toppings, they also had tasty treats and hot chocolate for visitors.
