Kinzer wins Blue Grass recount

A hand re-count confirmed unofficial results showing Blue Grass Mayor Brinson Kinzer won another term by a margin of only one vote.

Ballots were re-counted after unofficial election results showed Incumbent Mayor Brinson Kinzer defeated his opponent, Timothy Brandenburg, by a single vote in the November 5 election in Blue Grass, Iowa.

Election officials said Kinzer received 169 votes, Brandenburg received 168 votes and there were 16 “scattered write-in votes.”

Brandenburg requested the recount according to Scott County Elections Commissioner Roxanna Moritz.  The recount was authorized by the Scott County Board of Supervisors on November 19 and held November 20.

The recount involved hand-counting ballots as well as machine-counting.  In the first pass at the recount, the hand-counting reportedly resulted in a tie.  When those results did not match the machine count, another hand count was conducted.

The second count by hand reaffirmed Kinzer as the winner of the race for Blue Grass mayor.  Officials involved in the recount said the results were the same as the original ballot count, with Kinzer winning by one vote.
