Galesburg leaders will meet in a budget workshop again Monday, October 28, 2013.

The city's proposed budget includes more than $2 million worth of cuts for 2014. City leaders are considering a cut of 12 full-time employees for next year.

Four firefighters and two police officers could be cut. Six other employees could lose their jobs too. Total, cutting the staff could save the city $1 million.

"I've gotten to know the guys over here," Galesburg resident Laura Faulks said of the fire fighters. "And when I found out that they were planning on laying off my firefighters, I said, 'No. No way.'"

Nothing will be approved at Monday's work session. It starts at 2 p.m. at Galesburg City Hall.

City leaders will also discuss raising utility taxes and property taxes as a way to avoid the layoffs. They could also still cut workers from their staff and raise taxes at a smaller amount.
