Family, Friends Say Good-Bye to David Harker

Family and friends gathered to say farewell to David Harker.

Friends, family and people from all over came out Saturday, October 5, 2013 to St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rock Island, to say farewell to David Harker.

David went missing early Sunday, September 29, 2013. His body was found Wednesday, October 2, 2013 in the Mississippi River near the Buffalo Shores Recreation Area.

There was no foul play reported in the case, a post on the Facebook page dedicated to finding David, did confirm the body near Buffalo Shores was David Harker.

Hundreds gathered on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 for a candle lit vigil to honor David.

Yet those who knew David, said October 5, 2013 was about uplifting and encouraging the family.

Choir Director Marilyn Hessman says the family would have a tough time in the beginning, but would recover soon.

"It's gonna be very hard for them, for several weeks but eventually as good Christian and loving family as they are, they'll pull together and face what is tomorrow,"said Hessman.

64-year-old Bobby Jackson whose brother went missing and was later found dead, said David's story hit home for him.

"Whenever someone comes up missing, it kind of touches a nerve and brings back memories of my brother going missing for three to four days and we did find him, but when I found out, about David, I was touched by it," said Jackson.

One choir member who has known David's family for years, says the funeral was a reminder of the greatness that still lives in the community.

"The church was way full and that shows that people have respect for people and all people are good, the general population knows how to be good and help families," said August Kerres.

A benefit fund has been set up for David Harker's family, donations can be dropped off at DHCU Community Credit Union.
