Miley Cyrus might’ve torn down more than a few walls with her “Wrecking Ball” video.
The 20-year-old pop star has been accused of many things in recent weeks — including scarring the minds of children with her August performance at the MTV Video Music Awards — but she’s now being fingered as helping to remove a landmark from a Michigan college campus.
According to CNN affiliate WZZM, Grand Valley State University has decided to remove a giant pendulum sculpture on its main campus after some students tried to re-create Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” music video. In case you somehow missed it, the pop star spends part of the top-viewed video riding a wrecking ball in the nude (she does have shoes on, though).
The sculpture was installed in 1995, and it’s not uncommon for students to climb on it, WZZM reports. But lately, “several students climbed on the ball naked” in presumed attempts at copying Cyrus’ video.
But it sounds like it might not be gone forever — the university’s associate vice president of facilities services told WZZM that the ball was taken down “so its structural integrity could be examined.”
“We’ve been reviewing this over the last couple of weeks, trying to decide whether we really need to look at structural integrity of the installation,” the VP said. “We decided to have the ball removed and put into storage for now.”
Some GVSU students are protesting the sculpture’s removal, and gathered Tuesday night with chants of “Wrecking Ball!”
