An Iowa man has set-out on a journey across the country to promote awareness of organ donation.

Don Erickson, from Des Moines, Iowa, started his trip in June 2013, walking from New York to California. He made it about halfway as he crossed the Arsenal Bridge from Rock Island to Davenport on Saturday, August 31.

Erickson is part of the Iowa Donor Network and has been setting up camp wherever he can. He said the people he has met on his route have taught him that one donor can change many lives.

“This trip has really been a people trip,” Erickson said. “Listening to the stories of people who either lost loved ones and they donated their organs, or people who have actually received organs-I’ve learned that it’s not just those people, but it affects a lot of families.”

Erickson said people have been generous offering him money, food and shelter along the way.

When he arrived to Davenport, Erickson said he walked about 1,100 miles. The total distance of his journey is 2,300 miles.
