911 call tapes released from end of manhunt for Iowa escapee

Police have released tapes of conversations between an emergency call taker and a woman whose house was invaded by an Iowa prison escapee.

Police have released tapes of conversations between an emergency call taker and a woman whose house was invaded by an Iowa prison escapee.

Rodney Eugene Long, 38, escaped from the minimum-security Clarinda Correctional Facility Friday, August 16, 2013.

Two days later, police said Long shot a deputy who stopped to talk to him as Long walked along a rural highway.  Long was accused of taking the deputy’s car and leading police from several jurisdictions on a pursuit that ended when the patrol car crashed and overturned.

Police exchanged gunfire with Long during the pursuit.

Police said Long broke into the home of Jerome and Carolyn Mauderly at about 10 p.m. Monday, August 19, about 3/4 mile from where the pursuit ended.  Long held the Mauderlys captive in their home for several hours before the couple decided to defend themselves.

Carolyn Mauderly called 911 to report Long was in her home.  A short time later, an emergency dispatcher called back to the Mauderly home and learned 71-year-old Jerome Mauderly had shot and killed Long in the couple's kitchen.

WARNING:  The audio from the conversations between the dispatcher and Carolyn Mauderly may be disturbing to some people.
