Two thousand United Way volunteers are participating in the Day of Caring event Wednesday afternoon.

Volunteers are collecting 15,000 meals for local families at the QCCA Expo Center in Rock Island, but that's not the only place where people are helping out. Volunteers are also building a retaining wall at the Ridgeview Playground on Division Street in Davenport.

The United Way of the Quad Cities Area kicked off its event with a breakfast at the River Center in downtown Davenport. Volunteers John Riches and Kim Amrstrong are co-chairing this year's event.

The United Way hopes to raise $8.85 million this year. That would be a 5% increase from last year's amount.

"I think so many people get involved in this," Armstrong said. "We have over two thousand here today because they love this community. They know all of the great things that we do in terms of just raising money."

Volunteers announce how much money they've raised in February of next year. People have until then to raise that $8.85 million. To give to the United Way, click here.
