An Iowa man died in a skydiving accident after his parachute deployed, pulling him out of the aircraft.

On Friday, August 16, 2013 around 5:30 p.m., a man aboard an aircraft with Skydive Iowa died after his parachute prematurely deployed during take-off from the facility, according to a report by the Des Moines Register.

According to Skydive Iowa’s owner, the victim was on the aircraft to observe, and had not planned to actually sky dive, said the report. He said the victim had been on 10-12 observation rides before Friday’s accident.

WHO reported that although the victim was just along for a ride on the aircraft, everyone aboard a Skydive Iowa aircraft is required to wear a parachute as a safety precaution. As the plane took-off, the parachute accidentally opened and pulled the rider out.

The Des Moines Register reported that the only other person on the aircraft was the pilot who was uninjured.
