Illinois teens younger than 18-years-old are no longer permitted to use tanning beds.

Governor Pat Quinn signed the legislation into law on Thursday, August 15, 2013, saying it was a way to prevent serious health problems down the road.

According to a statement from the Office of the Governor, research has shown that over the last 40-years, the rate of young women developing melanoma has increased by 800-percent.

Teens will no longer be allowed to use public tanning beds, but that does not include beds set-up in private residences or spray-on tan products, according to the Illinois General Assembly. Currently, minors in Illinois can use tanning beds with their parent’s permission.

The Illinois Senate approved the proposal in May of 2013, voting 34-12.

The ban takes effect on January 1, 2014.
