A ban has been placed on the use of electronic cigarettes by Illinois residents under age 18.
The bill that Governor Pat Quinn signed on Thursday, August 15, 2013 bans teens under 18 from using electronic cigarettes as well as other alternative nicotine products.
A statement from the Governor’s Office said that although electronic cigarettes have no tobacco in them, they do contain nicotine.
“Nicotine has been proven to be a harmful and addictive substance,” said bill sponsor, State Senator John Mulroe. “We ban children from purchasing it in all of its other forms. This law just helps us keep up with the advancements in the ways it is being sold.”
According to the Center for Disease Control, nicotine is the most common addictive substance in the U.S.
The ban takes effect on January 1, 2014.
