A Davenport family whose dog went missing found him in an unlikely place, up in a tree.

A family from the McClellan Heights area noticed their 7-year-old border collie, Laddy, had escaped through his Invisible Fence on Friday, August 9, 2013, according to a report by the Quad City Times.

After searching for him, asking for help on Facebook, and posting fliers around the neighborhood, Laddy’s family could not find him.

A couple blocks away from the family’s home, on Sunday morning, Ron Stevenson was working in his yard when he heard a dog barking, reported the Quad City Times.

“I didn’t want to be a complaining neighbor, and besides, my wife and I are dog lovers,” said Stevenson. “When I was outside early Sunday, I heard a whining, and I knew something wasn’t right. This time, it sounded in distress.”

Following the sound of the barking, Stevenson said he found Laddy, 10-feet up a tree near his driveway. He called 911 to explain the situation to the police.

Waiting for the police to arrive, Stevenson decided it was time for the dog to get out of the tree.

“I just sort of shimmied up the tree. I grabbed him by the collar and sort of pulled him. I said, ‘It’s time for you to get out of this tree.’”

When the police got there, one of the officers said he had seen the family’s fliers and knew where Laddy belonged.

Laddy was returned to the family on Sunday morning.

Weeks said Laddy’s interest in squirrels likely got him up that tree, which Stevenson said was an oak tree growing on an angle. They speculated that perhaps a squirrel ran up the tree- which had a good platform for Laddy to run up. The task of getting down however, would have been a tough one.

“He was pretty subdued when he got home,” said Weeks. “He’s been doing a ton of sleeping.”
