A nonprofit organization in the Quad Cities is expanding and broke ground in Silvis.

On Saturday, August 3, 2013, Habitat for Humanity began work on its first home in Silvis, Illinois on 10th Street. The homeowners to-be are the Amegas from Togo, Africa. Over the period of a year, they earned at least 250 sweat equity hours and have begun working on their home.

The organization does not receive funds from the federal or state level. All the money used to build the homes comes from the community.

“Someone mentioned today that it is truly a hand-up, not a hand-out,” said Director of Development, Dougal Nelson. “These families are working hard. They just need a little lift, and this lift will give them the stability and security they need, give their children a home, and a place to study and a place to learn and grow.”

“It means a lot for me,” homeonwer to-be, Tona Amegan said. “I will now have a place to be my home.”

Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities has built 84 homes, including the new one in Silvis, in the last 20 years.
