A Iowa father faces a criminal charge after he allegedly put a shock collar on his 12-year-old son.

Daniel Hardwick, 35, was charged in Marion County with one count of neglect or abandonment of a dependent person.

Hardwick was arrested Thursday, July 25, 2013 after a DHS case worker contacted police.

KSBW reports Hardwick admitted putting a shock collar on the boy to motivate him to do household chores.  Hardwick also allegedly put the boy in a high chair near the street with a sign that read, “I refused to eat my big boy food.  Please feed me, I’m hungry.”

Hardwick reportedly said he never intended to actually shock his son, and that the shock collar was part of horseplay that was common among the five boys in his house.

Hardwick was released from jail Friday, July 26 after posting $20,000 bond.  Court records show he was appointed a public defender and was next scheduled to appear in court August 2, 2013.
