Grand jury convened in Rock Island County highway department probe

A grand jury convened to hear testimony in connection with a criminal investigation into the practices of the Rock Island County Highway Department.

A grand jury met Monday, July 22, 2013 to hear testimony in connection with a criminal investigation into the practices of the Rock Island County Highway Department.

At least two highway officials were called to testify in front of the grand jury convened at the Justice Center.

The Rock Island County Sheriff's Department launched an investigation back in April into the highway department. At the time, several workers were interviewed about using county equipment on personal time, use of the county gas pump, and using materials from county job sites for private projects.

WQAD has learned States Attorney John McGehee reviewed the police reports and decided to convene a grand jury to decide if criminal charges are warranted.
