Train caboose gets restored for next generation

People working to restore the Pioneer Train in Scott County are looking for help.

Over the years the railroad caboose has changed from baby blue with white stripes to worn down and rotted.

The maintenance caretaker for Pioneer Village, Wayne Gay, said the first week in August they plan to begin restoration on the train.

“It just needs a lot of loving care and we’re looking for people to come and help and volunteer their time to restore it back to its original glory,” said Gay.

He said they are in need of donations of money, equipment, materials, and time. Even if all you can do is pick up a paint brush, Gay said anyone can help with the project. His goal is to keep it thriving so it can be passed down to the next generation.

“The kids love the train,” he said. “They love getting on the train. They just adore the train. Getting on it and acting like they’re the conductor or the engineer driving the train.”
