Suspect shot and killed during Iowa home invasion

A suspect in a violent home invasion in Des Moines was shot and killed by police, officials say.

A suspect in a violent home invasion in Des Moines was shot and killed by police, officials say.

According to the Des Moines Register, officers were called to a reported home invasion around 1:40 a.m. on Friday, July 5, 2013. The female who called the police said two armed men were in her apartment and had beaten a resident and had struck her with a gun.

Police found the suspects nearby and shot one of the men, who was later pronounced dead, according to the report. No details have yet been released about the events leading to the shooting.

The other suspect was taken into custody, said police.

The victims of the home invasion have been released from the hospital after being treated for their injuries.

Des Moines police detectives and agents with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are conducting interviews with witnesses and officers. The Polk County Attorney’s Office will later determine if the shooting was justified.

“Even though it’s been a number of hours, it’s still very preliminary as far as what happened and what led up to the shootings,” said Des Moines Police Sgt. Steve Woody.
