Hail and high winds reported with Friday storms

Hail, heavy rain and wind gusts over 50 miles per hour were reported in some locations as storms moved through counties in our area Friday, June 21, 2013.

The storms prompted the National Weather Service to issue a severe thunderstorm watch for area counties that began mid-morning and expired at 1 p.m.    Some severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for counties north and west of the Quad Cities, as well as in Lee County, Illinois.

A trained spotter reported quarter-inch hail about a mile west of Cambridge in Henry County, Illinois at 1 p.m.   Quarter-inch hail was reported just after 11:30 a.m. by another trained spotter about four miles northwest of La Moille in Bureau County, Illinois.   That spotter also said heavy rain and gusty winds were part of the storm that moved through Bureau County.

Spotters reported quarter-inch hail west-northwest of Freeport in Stephenson County, Illinois as well.

Authorities at Iowa City Municipal Airport reported a wind gust of 51 miles per hour at 10:49 a.m.

A severe thunderstorm pushed through the Cedar Rapids area just after 10 a.m., and spotters there reported wind gusts of more than 60 miles per hour and at least one inch of rain southeast of the city.
