Construction of four-lane section of US-34 approved

The Biggsville Bypass will relocate US-34 to south of Biggsville and include almost six-miles of four-lane expressway.

Construction for a new four-lane expressway to be built in Henderson County has been approved.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the new expressway- the Biggsville Bypass- will relocate US-34 to south of Biggsville, from 1.5-miles east of IL-164 to 1.9-miles east of IL-94.

The project will include almost six-miles of four-lane expressway with three bridges. There will also be a new interchange at IL-94 and IL-116, drainage improvements, and earth embankment.

Transportation Secretary, Ann Schneider, said the new expressway will increase safety and connectivity for drivers.

“This project will improve the east-west flow of traffic, promote commerce, increase road safety, and create new construction jobs for the region,” said State Senator, John Sullivan.

According to the department, the Biggsville Bypass will serve as the first completed section of a four-lane highway on US-34 in Henderson and Warren Counties, Over 5,000 vehicles travel this location of the highway daily.

The project will cost about $40.6 million and is part of the Illinois Jobs Now! program.
