(CNN) — For his next role, Rob Lowe’s headed for the White House.

The 49-year-old actor, fresh off a stint playing Liberace’s plastic surgeon in HBO Films’ “Behind the Candelabra,” has lined up a gig playing President John F. Kennedy.

According to Deadline, Lowe will portray the president in National Geographic Channel’s “Killing Kennedy,” a two-hour drama based on the book by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard.

The story begins in 1959, and follows the lives of Kennedy and assassin Lee Harvey Oswald up until their paths cross in 1963.

Ginnifer Goodwin will play former First Lady Jackie O., while Michelle Trachtenberg has signed on to play Oswald’s wife Marina.

“Killing Kennedy” is set to begin production in June to prepare for a release on National Geographic later this year.
