Miss USA and a local medical center teamed up to launch a new program that was made with the goal of keeping people healthy.
A spokesperson from Genesis explained that the new initiative called Genesis Philanthropy is to benefit population health activities. The program was introduced on Thursday, May 30, 2013 in Davenport.
The program extends services outside of the hospital walls.
“We’re not waiting for these health crises to resolve themselves,” said a Genesis spokesperson. “We’re launching forward and we’re unleashing the power of philanthropy to change course.”
Supporter of the initiative, Jim Victor, said DeWitt Community Hospital Foundation, Mercer Foundation for Health, and Genesis Health and Services Foundation are partnering up for the program.
“It’s all about people,” said Victor.
Miss USA, Nana Meriwether supports the actions and goals of Genesis’ new initiative. She said medical causes are part of her platform. After Genesis Philanthropy was introduced, Meriwether, a former NCAA Division I All-American volleyball player from UCLA, joined some local players in a game of volleyball.
“It’s all about being healthy and picking something you love to do,” said Meriwether.
Meriwether co-runs her own non-profit organization called the Meriwether Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to improve health and alleviate poverty for those in rural and peri-urban areas in Africa.
