After teaching for 26 years and leading Glenview Middle School band to success, their band director is retiring. He’s leaving the school year with one last surprise concert.

It’s award night for band members. It’s the last time band director Jim Weir will share this moment with his students.

“I started a program when I first got here, it was lacking a little bit musicality, excitement,” says Weir.

Through hard work, community support and a lot of fundraisers, Glenview’s band was finally beating to their own drum.

“We’ve won the state championship, we’ve traveled to Florida seven times, to Toronto, Canada, to D.C, taken great trips, we’ve done very well in our contest,” says Weir.

Before the students had to say goodbye they had one more gift for him. Upstairs family, friends and around 100 alumni were there to perform one last concert. All were there to show their gratitude from current students to former, some even traveling miles to be there.

“I think that’s a testament to Mr. Weir that all of his former students came back from far and away in just a moment to put together a concert,” says former student Adam Smith.

It’s that close bond that weir says he’ll miss the most, “The kids and parents, I guess the friendships, the success, the seven day trips with kids were a pretty special thing.”
