The Rock Island County NAACP has come out against the Moline School District's plan to close two elementary schools after the 2014-2015 school year.
As previously reported, the Moline School District is looking to close both Ericsson and Garfield Schools. Superintendent David Moyer says that could save the district at least $300,000 a year. That is part of a plan to save the district more than $2 million a year.
"Losing Ericsson School will only serve to further destabilize the community and provide the negative imagery that the poor Latino community has been cast aside and the members of that community are on an island," Rock Island County NAACP President Elizabeth Sherwin said in the letter.
The district is also looking to expand Hamilton School because the kids from Garfield would move there in the new plan. Most of the Ericsson kids would move to Lincoln Irving in the process.
Monday's board meeting starts at 6 p.m. at Wilson Middle School. About 180 kids go to Ericsson.
