The decapitated body of a dog that disappeared from an Iowa animal shelter was reportedly found by a shelter employee.

KCCI reports the worker was walking another dog when the dead animal was found Thursday morning, April 25, 2013.  It was not yet clear what led to the animal’s disappearance.  It was discovered missing earlier in the week.

A post on the shelter’s Facebook page said they were raising money to purchase security cameras for the facility.

That post followed a previous one indicating the dog had been killed and placed near the railroad tracks.  The post said the position of the animal’s body was an indication it had been placed there and not struck by a train, and that trains were not running on the tracks due to flooding.

The shelter withheld specific information about the dog to avoid compromising the police investigation.
