Bogus letters appear to be from Galesburg mayor

Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza says recent letters conveying opinions about certain national matters are actually phony.

Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza says recent letters conveying opinions about certain national matters are actually phony.

“Two letters were returned for postage to City Hall in the city’s regular mail delivery,” said a statement from the City of Galesburg.  When Garza was told about the letters, he said he didn’t know about them nor did he have any idea who wrote them.

The letters “were made to appear as if Mayor Garza authored them,” the statement said. “Goth letters begin with the salutation ‘Dear Friend’ and each conveys opinions regarding matters of national concern.  The letters ended with the author identifying himself as Mayor Garza.”

Galesburg Police now have the letters, and they’re working to determine who actually wrote and sent them.

If you received a letter that appeared to have come from Mayor Garza, you’re asked to report it to police at (309) 345-3729.
