Beyond the Green Screen: Did Phil Really Get it Wrong?

Punxsutawney Phil is getting a lot of grief lately. He predicted an early spring and many believe that he lied. Actually, he didn’t lie and he never predicted anything. You would be surprised how many people don’t realize that.

Not to be or sound cynical but I never got into Groundhog Day. I don’t even mention the “holiday” during my forecasts. I feel weird about comparing the “forecast” of a rodent to my forecast that can be backed up with a degree in meteorology. I already know we will run a short story at some point during the newscast anyway.

That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the movie “Groundhog Day”. I think one of the most memorable quotes from the movie, and one of my favorites, is “I’ll give you a winter prediction: It’s gonna be cold, it’s gonna be grey, and it’s gonna last you for the rest of your life”.

Groundhog Day is really all about just having fun. Spring is a transitional period from Winter to Summer that will include all types of weather. You may find it surprising that our spring temperatures and precipitation so far this year are actually closer to normal than where we were last year.
