Postal Service ending Saturday delivery

UPDATED: The U.S. Postal service confirms plans to drop Saturday delivery of letters and first-class mail.

UPDATED:  The U.S. Postal service confirms plans to drop Saturday delivery of letters and first-class mail.

The new plan includes continuing package delivery Monday through Saturday, but letters and first-class mail would only be delivered Monday through Friday.

A news release from the USPS said they expect to see about $2 billion in savings.

The new delivery schedule is expected to roll out during the week of August 5, 2013.

“Mail addressed to PO Boxes will continue to be delivered on Saturdays. Post Offices currently open on Saturdays will remain open on Saturdays,” said a statement on the USPS website.

Postal workers protested when Congress discussed cuts back in April 2012.  Those cuts included stopping Saturday delivery within two years, closing and consolidating facilities and laying off 150,000 postal workers.

A month later, the Postal Service announced a modified consolidation plan that was expected to take about nine months and cut $1.2 billion from its budget.

The updated list of proposed and completed facilities consolidations is online – click here.   The list includes deactivating facilities in six cities in Illinois.
