Man trapped and killed beneath overturned bulldozer

A local man was killed when the bulldozer he was operating overturned and landed on top of him.

A bulldozer overturned, killing a man trapped beneath it at a construction site near the Davenport Lowe’s store.

It happened just after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at the hotel construction site between Lowe's and Great Escape in the 3900 block of Elmore Avenue in Davenport, Iowa.

The bulldozer came to rest on its side.

Emergency vehicles blocked the northbound lanes of Elmore Avenue at the scene.

His employer and police identified the victim as 56-year-old Thomas McLachlan of Davenport, Iowa.

Police said Mr. McLachlan was grading dirt on a steep embankment when the ground gave way and the bulldozer rolled onto its side.   He was declared deceased at the scene.

Mr. McLachlan had been the lead operator at Hawkeye Paving since 1987.

"The entire company is saddened by the loss of a very valuable employee and a wonderful person who will be missed terribly by all of us," said a statement posted on the company's website.
