Illinois residents who live within ten miles of the nuclear plant in Cordova are eligible to get free potassium iodide polls from the state.
Potassium Iodide (KI) is a non-prescription drug used to protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine that could be released during a nuclear power plant accident.
The Illinois Emergency Management Agency will offer vouchers for a two-day supply of the pills for each resident who lives within ten miles of any of the state’s six nuclear power plants, including Exelon’s Quad Cities Station plant in Cordova, Illinois.
The vouchers are redeemable at local Walgreens stores.
Illinois last distributed KI pills to residents in the ten-mile Emergency Planning Zone around each nuclear power plant in 2002.
More information about KI and the IEMA’s nuclear safety programs is available at the Ready Illinois website at www.Ready.Illinois.gov.
