Police: Davenport man drove stolen semi in pursuit

Iowa State Police said a Cedar County deputy used his patrol car to run a semi tractor off the road and end a pursuit.

Iowa State Police said a Cedar County deputy used his patrol car to run a semi tractor off the road and end a pursuit.

It started at about 10 p.m. Monday, October 22, 2012 on Interstate 80 near Walcott.  After determining the semi tractor had been reported stolen, troopers said they activated emergency lights and sirens but the semi driver did not stop.

Police said Elbert Lee Karr Jr., 47, of Davenport was at the wheel of the semi tractor.

Karr allegedly ran over multiple sets of stop sticks as he continued westbound on the interstate.  He exited at Atalissa where police said he continued southbound on gravel roads.

That’s when a Cedar County sheriff’s deputy used his patrol vehicle, a 2010 Ford Explorer, to strike the semi, forcing the semi into the ditch at 305th Street and Ivory Avenue.

No injuries were reported.

Karr was arrested.

Iowa Department of Corrections records show Karr served several jail sentences since 2000 for various burglary and stolen property convictions.  He had most recently been on parole since July 14, 2010 and that parole was expected to be discharged December 26, 2012.
