A fire broke out this morning at a historic church just outside Centerville, Iowa before worshippers made their way to Sunday morning services.

It happened just before 6 AM.

That’s when fire crews found the Sharon Chapel Church, just southeast of Centerville full of flames.

Sheriff’s deputies say the church is a total loss.

The building was built in the mid to late 1800’s but hasn’t been used for several years.

Authorities are trying to figure out what sparked the fire, but say they’re treating the fire as a criminal investigation.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the Appanoose County Sheriff at 641-437-7100 or Crime Stoppers at 641-856-3134.
