Kayaking is not usually part of a typical triathlon, but it is for those who want to "tame the slough."

Organized by River Action, the "Taming of the Slough" is an non-traditional triathlon that took place on and around Sylvan Island in Moline on Saturday, September 15th.

Racers canoed or kayaked three miles in the Sylvan Slough, then completed an eight-mile bike ride on Sylvan Island, finishing with a three-mile run through the streets of Moline.

Organizers say the race, which has been around for seven years, continues to draw attention to recreational opportunities in the Quad Cities.

"There's more and more interest in paddle sports and off-road cycling, so we see people participating year-round, not just on September 15th," says Dan McNeil, Race Director.

Nearly 200 people participated in Saturday's "Taming of the Slough."
