Seaford won’t reopen in Rock Island after all

A Rock Island company that closed in 2009 had plans to reopen, but now those plans are scrapped.

A Rock Island company that closed in 2009 had plans to reopen, but now those plans are scrapped.

Seaford Clothing got a grant in 2012 from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to renovate its former factory building in Rock Island, Illinois.  The company also reportedly got a contract to provide pants to a big-box store.  Those factors combined to prompt Seaford officials to reopen the Rock Island factory.

The return to Rock Island would have brought at least 100 jobs to the area as well.

Then Seaford’s parent company, HMX Group, announced it had to refinance after filing for bankruptcy.  The terms of the refinancing deal stipulate the company cannot expand right now.

Rock Island City Manager Thomas Thomas confirmed the facility won’t reopen in Rock Island this year.
