Dedication to diabetic patients and decades of work as a nurse landed Marsha Menke on a list of Hospital Heroes in Iowa.
Menke founded the Genesis Diabetes Care Center more than 20 years ago. She also developed a diabetes self-management program and one of the first outpatient insulin pump programs in the Midwest.
“She helped create a statewide diabetes directory; established a diabetes support group; and for nearly 20 years, has provided tireless support for insulin pump patients,” said a spokesperson for Genesis.
Menke works side-by-side with nearly 700 patients who are on insulin pumps in the Genesis Diabetes Care program, and she usually sleeps in three-hour increments so she can be available to check on new insulin pump patients. Menke has been a nurse for more than 45 years.
Menke and other Iowa Hospital Hero award winners will be recognized at the Iowa Hospital Association convention in October.
