If you get a call warning of a fine because you missed jury duty, it just might be a scam.

That’s the word from Julie Carlin, Clerk of the District Court for Cedar and Scott counties in Iowa.

Carlin says her office has received calls from people saying they were called and told they owed a $500 fine because they missed jury service.

“Although penalties can be imposed for missing jury service, they are not imposed in this manner,” Carlin said.

If you receive notice that you owe a fine because of missed jury service, you should not give out personal information to the caller.  Instead, hang up and call the clerk of the court at (563) 326-8743.
