Ag in the AM: House May Hold Farm Bill Vote This Week

Republican leaders abandon plan to extend current farm bill, may push for a vote on a new Farm Bill this week

WASHINGTON, DC -  The U.S. House could vote as soon as Wednesday on a new five year Farm Bill.

House Republicans could not muster enough support to extend the current bill for a year and instead could vote on the full measure this week.

Hearings, including one in Galesburg in April, helped craft the bill which made it out of the House Agriculture Committee last month.

Republicans have had troubles finding a middle ground between conservatives and farm-state lawmakers over farm subsidies and the food stamp program.

A one-year extension was to be debated on the floor of the House Wednesday but that move was withdrawn last night in favor of an "up-or-down" vote on the whole bill to help drought-stricken farmers as soon as possible.
