Shelby Harris of Rock Island, Illinois leaves behind a long legacy in the Quad Cities.

Harris died Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at the Rock Island Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where he had lived for the past six years.

He was also the oldest man in the United States at 111 years of age.

Harris was born in 1901 and moved to the Quad Cities in 1942.  He was married twice, and outlived both of his wives.  He also outlived his three daughters.

He celebrated his last birthday in the spring of 2012, surrounded by his friends.  He also threw out the first pitch at the River Bandits baseball home opener this year.

His advice for a long life?

“One of the greatest things in the world is to love people and believe in people.”

His published obituary said funeral arrangements were pending with Hodgson Funeral Home in Rock Island.
