Beer consumption is down year-to-year in Iowa and Illinois.
That’s according to a new report from the Beer Institute, which tracks statistics for beer making and beer consumption across the U.S.
According to the report, Iowa continued to rank #29 out of 50 states for barrels of beer shipped with more than 2.38 million barrels shipped in 2011.
The report says there are 2,195,714 people age 21 or older in Iowa, and the average beer consumption is 33.7 gallons for each of those people. That’s the 13th-highest per capita consumption.
Illinois ranked #28 for consumption at 28.9 gallons per person age 21 and older. Illinois ranked #6 again in 2011 for shipments, with more than 9.2 million barrels shipped.
Compare that to top-ranked California where more than 21.8 million barrels of beer were shipped. Washington, D.C. was last in shipments with 429,298 barrels shipped.
As for per capita consumption, New Hampshire ranked first with 43.0 gallons and Connecticut was last with 21.8 gallons per person.
