Illinois colleges make top 25 list for campus crime

Two universities in Illinois and one in Wisconsin made the Daily Beast list of “America’s 25 Most Crime-Rattled Colleges.”

Two universities in Illinois and one in Wisconsin made the Daily Beast list of “America’s 25 Most Crime-Rattled Colleges.”

The list was compiled using publicly-available crime data from the U.S. Department of Education.   

Ivy League schools such as Harvard and Yale were among those on the list, which examined colleges with annual enrollments of more than 6,000 students. 

Crimes considered were murder, negligent murder, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, car theft and arson. 

The Daily Beast ranks the University of Alabama at Huntsville the worst for crime, with three murders, four robberies, ten aggravated assaults, 80 burglaries and eight car thefts reported from 2008 to 2010.

Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago ranked number 20 on the list.  The campus has had one murder, ten robberies, 14 car thefts and six aggravated assaults in that same time period. 

The University of Wisconsin, Stout in Menomonie ranked number 11 with one negligent homicide, one robbery, 17 aggravated assaults, 59 burglaries and five car thefts in that same time period.

Northern Illinois University in DeKalb ranked fourth on the list with five murders, ten robberies, 24 aggravated assaults, 68 burglaries, eight car thefts and two arsons reported on campus between 2008 and 2010.
