Man sentenced for stealing money from donation jar

A Davenport man who admitted to stealing a donation jar from a convenience store was sentenced to two years of probation.

Surveillance cameras captured the theft.

Andrew Noriega, 28, surrendered to authorities January 6, 2012 after photos of the December 16, 2011 theft appeared in area media.

The money in the jar was being collected to help fund new playground equipment at the Sheffield, Illinois Veterans Park.

Noriega was sentenced in Bureau County Court Wednesday, June 13, 2012.  He was ordered to serve two years of conditional discharge, pay a fine and fees of $250, pay $500 restitution and perform 50 hours of public service work in the Village of Sheffield.  The public service work must be completed by October 16, 2012.
