Explosion injures highway department worker

A Bureau County Highway Department employee was reportedly hurt in an explosion at the department facility in Princeton, Illinois.

A Bureau County Highway Department employee was reportedly hurt in an explosion at the department facility in Princeton, Illinois.

It happened just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2012. 

The Bureau County Republican reports the man was using a tool to remove the top of an empty 55-gallon drum when the explosion occurred.   The drum had formerly held hydraulic oil.

The explosion happened in the shop area and there were no signs of fire or damage visible from the exterior of the building.   No one else was hurt.

The injured man was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.  His injuries were reportedly not life-threatening.
