Ag in the AM: Rain Hits at Right Time

Rains help planted crops which were facing long, dry May days

DES MOINES, Iowa - The rains we've seen were a welcome sign throughout much of Iowa and northern Illinois.

The latest crop reports shows improved conditions for corn and soybean crops in both states.

75-percent of Iowa's corn farmers say their crops are in good to excellent condition.
About two thirds of Illinois farmers are saying the same.  It's the same story for soybean farmers who are now finished planting their crop for the season.

Iowa farm analysts say the rains helped stabilize crop conditions throughout most of the state.

Remembering Pearson

DES MOINES, Iowa - Tributes are coming in for WHO Radio farm journalist and Iowa Public TV "Market to Market" host Mark Pearson.

His co-hosts talked about him yesterday on WHO'S "The Big Show" after he passed away at his home last weekend after suffering a heart attack.

Both Iowa Governor Terry Branstad and U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack called Pearson a passionate voice for Iowa agriculture.

"He was passionate about what we did," Vilsack told WHO-TV.

"He enjoyed what he did. he had fun at it. It wasn't just a job. It was a part of life and it was who he was."

Pearson's nationally televised "Market to Market" program aired on Iowa Public Television to 20 states.
